Dear Parents/Carers and Students,

Today our Leadership Team met and further advanced our preparations for what will be a very different school term.

A reminder that the announcement on Tuesday from the Premier was, if you can learn from home, you must.  The media and government have in recent days highlighted the positive impact peoples decisions to self-isolate and follow social distancing measures are having on keeping the majority of us healthy and safe.  The decision by the government to not run school as normal for Term 2 is to continue the ‘flatting of the curve’ and to ensure that all members of our community remain healthy and safe.

Although we are not expecting any children to attend, if your child needs to attend school please make contact with Doug, Kieran or Huw via phone or email.  Their contact details are provided below.  Our playground equipment will continue to not be in use for those being supervised and those who utilise the school grounds for exercise after school hours.

For those learning from home, we have a clear message for you.  Mums, Dads and Carers you are not the teacher.  You are their parent or carer.  We ask that you do your best to provide students with a range of experiences and use the work pack that has been provided to support these experiences for the first week of term 1.

Classroom teachers will be in contact with you via phone on Tuesday or Wednesday next week to discuss how learning from home looks for your family. The focus will be around what supports do you need, what style of learning would suit your family and how can we get any supports to you?  Teachers and Aides have already worked together to put together a second work pack for students.  Teachers next week will be looking to individualise these packs to student need and interests.  The packs will have information about the purpose of each activity and a personalised letter to you and your family.  These will be available from Monday April the 20th.  Teachers will plan with you about how you wish to receive this new learning pack next week.  Our intention is to distribute packs every fortnight throughout the term.  We thank the staff for their professionalism and care in putting together these packs.

As a school we believe technology will be useful throughout the term as a means of maintaining for your child positive relationships with staff and classmates.  Teachers will discuss with you the most practical and safe way for your child to have these ‘virtual’ face to face interactions next week when they call.  If access to the internet or devices that will allow this to happen are a barrier for families, then there will be the option to borrow technology from the school to enable this to happen for all students.

To build on this effort to use technology to maintain relationships and keep our community well informed during this unique period in our lives, we will be establishing a Facebook page.  We look forward to having this connection with our community and will distribute more information about appropriate use and purpose once the page is up and running.  The Skoolbag App will also continue to be used.  We believe the first Facebook post will be a video message from Doug.  We hope he chooses his best ‘tie’ for the occasion.

Our office will be open as normal on Tuesday and Doug, Kieran and Huw are available via phone or email.  Please contact us with queries should you have them.  You all continue to be in our thoughts,

Take care,

BWPS Leadership Team
